The Rolex Shanghai Masters, the penultimate Masters 1000 event of the season, celebrated its draw ceremony on Monday

The 14th edition of the Rolex Shanghai Masters, the largest tennis venue in Asia, unveiled a balanced path to the crown at the Qizhong Tennis Center on Monday with legend Margaret Court and wild cards Stan Wawrinka and Wu Yibing in attendance.

“I always enjoy coming back to Asia, especially in China. I have a lot of support here,” said Wawrinka, who will make his 12th appearance at the ATP Masters 1000.

“It’s amazing to have the opportunity to play one more time here. I am really grateful to receive the wild card and looking forward to starting the tournament.”

Sinner, Alcaraz, and Djokovic’s Path to the Crown

Reigning champion Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic, who has claimed four titles, a tournament record, in his 10 appearances, have been drawn on the same half of the draw.

Last season, the two-time Australian Open winner prevailed over the Serbian player 7-6(4), 6-3 in the championship match, claiming his seventh title of the year.

Set to clash in the semifinals, whoever wins that potential encounter could face world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz next, who is on a semifinal collision course with No. 3 Alexander Zverev.

Defending Champion Returns to Shanghai

Drawn in the bottom half of the draw, Sinner will kick off his title defense in the second round, featuring German Daniel Altmaier or a qualifier.

Eager to regain the Year-end No.1, the Italian could meet Dutch player Tallon Griekspoor in the third round and 14th seed Alexander Bublik in the fourth round.

The player from Kazakhstan trails Alcaraz (7) for most titles won in 2025, recently lifting his fourth trophy in Hangzhou.

Moreover, the Wimbledon winner is seeded to play fifth seed Taylor Fritz or Dane Holger Rune in the last eight.

An Unstoppable Spanish Force

Top seed Alcaraz landed in the top half of the draw, but before heading to Shanghai, the 22-year-old is scheduled to compete for the Japan Open title after reaching his ninth consecutive championship match.

On Tuesday, the Murcia native will square off against Fritz, who is returning to the final in Tokyo for the first time since 2022.

A week ago, the American overpowered the No.1 Spanish player in straight sets at the Laver Cup.

In Beijing, the young star suffered an ankle scare early in the tournament, but went from strength to strength to deliver emphatic performances throughout the ATP 500.

However, the problem has affected his movement at times and could trouble him after consecutive appearances at the Laver Cup and an explosive run in Japan.

Holding a record 66 wins this year, the man who leads the tour guaranteed a bye into the second round, and will open against American teenager Learner Tien, contesting his maiden semifinal in China vs. Daniil Medvedev tomorrow, or Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic.

By seeding, Briton Cameron Norrie becomes a potential third-round opponent, with Medvedev possibly as the next in line.

In a projected quarterfinal, Alcaraz could face Australian Alex de Minaur or ninth seed Karen Khachanov.

A Record-Extending Fifth Title on the Line

For his part, Djokovic, who owns the most Shanghai wins (39), will return to action at the Masters 1000, making his first appearance at tour level since falling to Alcaraz at the US Open semifinals early this month.

Chasing a record-extending fifth crown, he will face either in-form Frenchman Corentin Moutet or former world No. 3 Marin Cilic.

Then, he is seeded to meet American Frances Tiafoe, who has struggled to produce his best tennis throughout the year.

Should he advance to the round of 16, the fans could see a showdown between the Olympic gold medalist and 13th seed Andrey Rublev.

Furthermore, the Belgrade-born is projected to clash against big-serving Ben Shelton in the quarterfinals, another heavyweight match for the 38-year-old who has never lost at the event before the last eight.
