Frances Tiafoe Jr. was born on January 20, 1998, in Hyattsville, Maryland, USA. He stands 188 cm tall and he plays right-handed with a two-handed backhand.
His parents Constant (Frances Sr.) Tiafoe and Alphina Kamara emigrated from Sierra Leone to escape the civil war in their home country. His father worked as a custodian at the Junior Tennis Champions Center (JTCC) in College Park, Maryland, where Frances and his twin brother Franklin grew up playing tennis.
Tiafoe began training at JTCC at age five under Coach Misha Kouznetsov and later moved to the USTA National Training Center in Boca Raton, Florida.
Tiafoe is nicknamed “Big Foe” for his commanding presence on court. Off the court, he has been in a relationship with fellow tennis player Ayan Broomfield since 2018.
Junior Career
Tiafoe had an illustrious junior career that included winning the prestigious Orange Bowl in December 2013 at age fifteen—the youngest player ever to do so. He also won the Easter Bowl in April 2014 and reached World Number 2 in the ITF junior rankings.
His best junior Grand Slam result came at the US Open in September 2014 when he reached the semifinals before losing to Quentin Halys in three sets.
Professional Career
Tiafoe turned professional in April 2015 after winning his first ITF Futures title at Bakersfield. Later that year at the French Open, he became the youngest American male to compete in the main draw since Michael Chang in 1989.
In February 2018 at the Delray Beach Open, Tiafoe won his maiden ATP singles title by defeating Peter Gojowczyk in straight sets. This victory made him the youngest American male to win an ATP title since Andy Roddick in 2002.
In 2019, Tiafoe reached his first Grand Slam quarterfinal at the Australian Open after defeating Kevin Anderson and Grigor Dimitrov but lost to Rafael Nadal.
In 2022, Tiafoe achieved his career-best Grand Slam result by reaching the semifinals of the US Open. During his run, he defeated Nadal in four sets—the first American male to beat Nadal at a Major since James Blake in 2005, In the same run, he also defeated Andrey Rublev before losing to Carlos Alcaraz in five sets.
In 2023, he won two ATP titles—the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championships in Houston and Stuttgart Open on grass—completing a set of titles across three surfaces. He also reached his first Masters semifinal at Indian Wells before losing to Daniil Medvedev.
At the 2024 US Open, Tiafoe reached his second semifinal after defeating Grigor Dimitrov but lost to Taylor Fritz in five sets.
