Medvedev grew up studying physics and mathematics at a specialized school before enrolling in economics at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations. He later shifted to the Russian State University of Physical Education and graduated as a certified coach.

He stands 198 cm tall and plays right-handed with a two-handed backhand.

Off the court, Medvedev speaks fluent French and English alongside his native Russian. He married Daria Chernyshkova in September 2018, and the couple welcomed their daughter Alisa in October 2022. Medvedev is also an avid supporter of FC Bayern Munich.

Junior Career

Medvedev started playing junior tennis at age thirteen and won his first junior title as a qualifier in December 2010. Between October 2012 and July 2013, he won six junior titles and reached his career-high junior ranking of World Number 13 in early 2014.

His best performances at junior Grand Slam events include reaching the third round at the Australian Open and French Open in 2014 and the US Open in 2013.

Professional Career

Medvedev made his ATP debut at the Kremlin Cup in doubles in October 2015 and earned his first singles ATP win at the Ricoh Open in June 2016.

In January 2017, he reached his first ATP final at the Chennai Open and broke into the top-100 rankings later that year after defeating Stan Wawrinka at Wimbledon for his maiden Grand Slam match win.

Medvedev’s breakout year came in 2018 when he won three ATP titlesSydney International, Winston-Salem Open, and Tokyo Open—finishing as the player with the most hardcourt wins that season.

Medvedev’s career skyrocketed during the North American hardcourt swing of 2019 when he reached four consecutive finals at the Washington Open, Rogers Cup, Cincinnati Masters and US Open.

He claimed his first Masters title in Cincinnati by defeating David Goffin and reached his first Grand Slam final at the US Open but lost to Rafael Nadal in five sets.

In November 2020, Medvedev won the ATP Finals by defeating Dominic Thiem in three sets after overcoming Novak Djokovic earlier in the tournament. This victory made him the first player to defeat the top three ranked players en route to an ATP Finals title.

In September 2021, Medvedev achieved his biggest career milestone by winning his first Grand Slam title at the US Open against Djokovic in straight sets. This victory denied Djokovic a calendar-year Grand Slam.

Medvedev reached two more Grand Slam finals—the Australian Open (2022) and US Open (2023)—but fell short against Nadal and Djokovic respectively.

In January 2024, Medvedev played one of his most grueling tournaments at the Australian Open where he reached his third final but lost to Jannik Sinner after leading by two sets to love. Despite setbacks later that year at Wimbledon and US Open semifinals against Carlos Alcaraz and Sinner respectively.

In April 2025, Medvedev recorded his milestone achievement of winning his three-hundredth hardcourt match during Qatar ExxonMobil Open quarterfinals.
