Ball Hog is a derogatory term used in basketball. It refers to a player who does not pass the ball to a point that it affects the performance of the entire team.
It is a player who keeps the ball to themselves for too long, instead of passing to teammates who might have a better chance of scoring.
Ball hogs usually dribble the ball a lot and take many shots, even when they're not the best option.
The player who does this monopolizes the team’s play of the ball and comes with a very poor assist and turnover ratio.
It is not considered a violation but is generally considered an unacceptable behavior in basketball. Many consider it a highly subjective term since any individual player might be considered as such by a number of observers but not by others.
In some professional leagues, a player who is exceptionally competent and takes control of the ball for the best interest of the team is usually not termed a ball hog. However, in amateur leagues, ball-hogging is considered unsportsmanlike.
