In American Football, “possession” simply denotes which team has control over the ball and is able to score. Each team has a chance to gain “possession” of the ball during the entire game and dictate the scoring. To maintain “possession”, the team’s player must maintain control of the ball with any part of his body – other than his hands - touching the ground.
