Originally, footballs were made of animal bladder and stuffed with straw to create an oval shape. The term “pigskin” came to be when the animal bladder was placed within a leather cover. However, when vulcanized rubber was invented in 1844, footballs began to be made using rubber and “pigskin” fell out of fashion around the 1860s.
