Lay-in

The lay-in is a type of shot used in basketball where the player jumps and then releases the ball, allowing it to land directly over the rim and into the basket.

It is similar to doing a layup in a way that it is performed right in front or under the basket. The only difference between the two is that the lay-in does not use the backboard to get the shot while the layup does.

This is typically an offensive shot where a player can grab the ball while in rebound and right away put the ball into the basket.

Like the layup, the lay-in is a two-point shot, and is considered a high-percentage shot.

Example of Use:

  • Jason Kidd fakes out the defender, and shoots a lay-in as the clock is in its last five seconds, breaking away from the tie, and giving the Mavericks a two-point lead over the Suns.
