Lane is a basketball term that refers to an area on the court that is right underneath the backboard and extends from the free throw line to the end line.
It is a rectangular-shaped area that is bounded by the foul lanes, free throw line, and the baseline.
The lane is usually very noticeable as it is painted a different color than the rest of the court to help it stand out to referees.
On an NBA regulation court, the lane measures 19’ H x 16’ W. In college courts, the lane will be 12 feet wide.
This area of the court is sometimes used interchangeably with the term ‘The key’.
Example of Use:
- Michael Jordan shoots down the lane and heads for an uncontested layup.
