Intentional foul is a form of personal foul in basketball. It is deemed premeditated by officials. And is sometimes committed by a defensive player to stop the game.
In some basketball leagues, an intentional foul can include contact that slows down an offensive player’s clear advantageous position.
It can also come in the form of contact with an opponent located away from the ball who is not involved in a play and excessive contact with a player from another team while the ball is in the air or when the shooter is still airborne.
Rules for calling intentional fouls may differ from one league to another.
It can be used as a clock management technique and is sometimes used to stop the clock when time is running down. It can also be used to prevent the other team from scoring an easy basket.
