Kyrie Irving is an Australian-born, American professional basketball player. He plays in the National Basketball Association for the Dallas Mavericks.

Irving has been named an NBA All-Star seven times. He was also part of the Cleveland Cavaliers team that won the NBA Championship in 2016. Kyrie was also named NBA Rookie of the Year in 2012. His parents are American ex-pats and his dad used to play collegiate basketball for Boston University under Coach Rick Pitino. The family had moved to Australia when his father played for the South East Australian Basketball League. They moved back to the United States when Irving was a toddler.

His mother is of Native American descent and Kyrie and his sister were given a “welcome home” ceremony in 2018 at the Standing Rock Indian Reservation.

Career

Kyrie attended the Montclair Kimberley Academy before transferring to St. Patrick High School. He led the team to winning the New Jersey Tournament of Champions. In 2009, Irving went to Duke University where he became a contender for the NCAA Freshman of the Year.

In 2011, he declared for the NBA draft and was picked by the Cleveland Cavaliers as the first overall pick. He was also chosen for the 2012 Rising Stars Challenge. Irving was also voted as the NBA Rookie of the Year and is the only player to be voted unanimously into the NBA All-Rookie First Team.

His 2012 to 2013 Season was marred by several injuries which made him miss several games. However, he was still able to become the youngest player to score 40 points in Madison Square Garden in the history of the NBA. Irving was also chosen to join the All-Star game.

Irving was the All-Star Game MVP. He also achieved his first career triple-double with 21 points, 12 assists, and 10 rebounds. In the next season, he became a part of the Cleveland Cavaliers’ “Big Three”, which had him, Kevin Love, and LeBron James team up to boost the team’s performance and bring them to the NBA finals.

While he started the 2015 to 2016 Season with injuries, the team went on to become the Eastern Conference’s first seed. Irving had an exceptional performance during the finals that helped the Cavaliers win the NBA Championship against the Golden State Warriors.

The 2016 to 2017 Season marked Irving’s last year with the Cleveland Cavaliers. While the team reached the finals again, they failed to defeat the Warriors. Irving requested to be traded to the Boston Celtics in July 2017. He recorded a milestone as having the most points in a player’s first six games since Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett.

He debuted for the Celtics in October 2017. In early 2018, he was ruled out from playing as he was recovering from knee surgery to remove a tension wire that was inserted back in 2015. He became a free agent in 2019 and in July, he signed with the Brooklyn Nets.

A right shoulder injury caused him to miss a number of games. He returned to active play in January 2020. In 2021, Irving was once again named an NBA All-Star.

In February 2023, he requested a trade from the Nets, eventually joining Luka Doncic in the Dallas Mavericks. In 2023, he was named an All-Star for the 8th time.
