Nikola Mektic
Nikola Mektic is a professional tennis player from Croatia who specializes in doubles. His highest and current doubles career ranking is number 2. He won the Grand Slam championship two times, the first was during the Australian Open in 2020 and the second one was in the recent 2021 Wimbledon Championships.
The 6-foot right-handed Mektic was born in Zagreb in Croatia. He started playing tennis at a very young age of 6. This was right after his older brother; Luka took up the sport. By 2006 he stepped into the world of professional tennis. In 2008, he made his debut in the ATP Challenger and ITF Futures singles category. After spending a good number of years in the singles division and achieving a rank of number 213, he decided to specialize in doubles in 2016. Immediately after focusing on his doubles career, he made his ATP doubles final via a wildcard selection with partner Antonio Sancic. This was during the Croatia Open that was held in Umag.
After his first ATP finals debut, Mektic continued to win a good number of doubles titles that led to his current 2nd place ranking. From 2018 to 2019, he qualified for the ATP Finals with partner Alexander Peya and reached his first finals in the Grand Slam mixed doubles category. This was also the time when he competed for Croatia in the Davis Cup and took home the championship title. In addition, he won three titles in the Masters 1000 including the 2019 Monte Carlo, 2019 Indian Wells and 2018 Madrid.
In the 2020 and 2021 seasons, Mektic and his partners continued to dominate the tennis courts. In 2020, he won his first ATP finals doubles title as well as the Australian Open title in the mixed doubles category. This was also the year when he made his debut in the top 10 doubles ranking. By 2021, he amassed 8 ATP titles and was declared the number 2 doubles player in the world. In addition, he also won gold in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
