World No. 13 Flavio Cobolli notched the third Top 10 win of his career by ending seventh seed Daniil Medvedev's run at the Mutua Madrid Open with a dramatic three-set win, reaching the quarterfinals on Tuesday evening.

Following a close round of 16 duel, 10th seed Flavio Cobolli joined the last eight elite for the first time at the Masters 1000 level by prevailing over former world No. 1 Daniil Medvevedv 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 in a two-hour and 19-minute showpiece.

Lengthy rallies set the tone of a gruelling encounter throughout, with the 23-year-old refusing to go home, becoming the sixth active Italian player to become a Masters 1000 quarterfinalist instead.

On the other side of the net, Medvedev left it all on a surface that does not favor his game, despite having added to his list of career accomplishments the prestigious Italian Open crown in 2023.

The former US Open champion came back from the brink in relentless fashion to even the match at one set apiece by converting a clinical double break in the 12th game to seal the second set in 53 minutes.

The 30-year-old put his experience and skillset to good use, fighting until the last point at the Arantxa Sanchez Stadium.

In the final set, they went with serves until the world No. 10 double-faulted in the ninth game, and Cobolli seized his chances by converting the break and holding his nerve to pocket the set 6-4 and the triumph.

The three-time ATP title holder made the difference by producing brilliant shotmaking, particularly on the return, recording a return rate of 152 compared to his adversary's 114, winning 22 percent on his first delivery and 60 percent on his second.

In addition, he converted three of six break point opportunities, fending off four of the six break points he faced across the match.

All in all, the Florence native fired 37 winners against 31 unforced errors to Medvedev's 27 and 34, respectively, winning 70 percent of the points on his first serve.

Next, the Italian will meet either two-time Madrid champion Alexander Zverev or Czech Jakub Mensik for a place in the Madrid semifinals.

At the time of writing, they were heading for a decider at Manolo Santana Stadium.
