On Monday, the first Masters 1000 of the season, the BNP Paribas Open, unveiled its men’s and women’s singles draws, indicating the probable scenarios to the final for former world No. 1 Iga Swiatek and No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz.

The stakes are high for the defending champions at Indian Wells in 2025 as they bid to make history on the 25th anniversary of Indian Wells Tennis Garden, home to the prestigious Masters 1000.

Both players are chasing a third crown in the desert, a feat no female player has accomplished yet.

Swiatek, a five-time major champion, claimed the title in Tennis Paradise in 2022 and 2024.

A challenging run awaits the world No. 2, yet to find her best tennis this season.

She launched her campaign at the Australian Open, falling in the semifinals to eventual champion Madison Keys.

Ever since, titles have eluded the 23-year-old, whose runs in Doha and Dubai were cut short by dominant opponents.

The second seed has a new chance to turn the tables in the desert, but a star-packed field is also fighting for glory.

After a bye in the first round, Swiatek projected quarterfinals feature potential clashes with the likes of Caroline Garcia, Ons Jabeur, Karolina Muchova, Paula Badosa, Linda Noskova, Zheng Qinwen and Yulia Putintseva.

Meanwhile, reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz is looking to lift the trophy for the third consecutive season, joining five-time champion Novak Djokovic and legend Roger Federer as the third player this century to reach such an achievement.

The 21-year-old is making his fifth appearance at an event where he has always left his mark in epic matches against some of the best tennis players in the world, such as 22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal.

In 2022, the two Spaniards met at the Indian Wells semifinals, a brutal encounter Nadal won after three marathon sets in over three hours.

The 38-year-old fended off the heavy wind, a relentless young talent, a sore body, and through it all, he surged to the final, losing to American top racquet Taylor Fritz.

After undergoing further tests in Spain, the doctors revealed that the man who won 36 Masters 1000s across his career had sustained a stress fracture of the rib cage. An injury originated during the semifinal with Alcaraz.

For his part, that same year, the Murcia native claimed his maiden major at the US Open. Ever since, the talented Spaniard has become a four-time Grand Slam champion, returning to rule in the desert, winning the title twice since that legendary semifinal.

Juan Carlos Ferrero pupil’s projected path sees him opening proceedings against Frenchman Quentin Halys in the second round, following a bye.

Furthermore, he could square off with in-form Denis Shapovalov and 14th seed Grigor Dimitrov before facing Djokovic in a potential quarterfinal showdown.
