Reigning champions Team Germany will face off against Team China in Perth on Monday night

Following a perfect start to their title defense on Sunday, eliminating Team Brazil with a 3-0 tie triumph, Germany will clash against China on Monday night at the RAC Arena in Perth, bidding to secure Group E win, qualifying for the mixed team event quarterfinals.

Meanwhile, the Chinese squad swept through Brazil to open their campaign at the venue, dropping just one set en route to a ruthless 3-0 tie victory last Friday.

Next, world No. 45 Zhang Zhizhen will take on No. 2 Alexander Zverev. They met once before on tour in 2024 and the German emerged victorious earning a straight-set quarterfinal win in Hamburg.

Both players produced straightforward wins for their nations over Brazilian Thiago Monteiro in their group stage.

After nailing a sharp straight sets triumph over Monteiro, Zverev asserted: “I think this is the first time we’ve been up 2-0 in a tie. Last year, we were playing a deciding match every single time, so it’s nice to know that we’ve got this one in the bag already.”

The second rubber will feature world No. 175 Gao Xinyu, who will meet No. 80 Laura Siegemund.

A confident Gao will hit the court on Monday, coming off the back of achieving her biggest career victory; the 27-year-old stunned the relentless Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia 5-7, 6-4, 7-5 after three hours and 22 minutes, a physical match that took both players to the edge.

Siegmund also rallied to overcome Haddad Maia at the event, giving her country the opening lead in her return to the competition.

Ultimately, the German, who helped her country claim the United Cup title, clinched a 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 win after two hours and 33 minutes on Sunday.

“It’s the first match of the year against such a great player, it’s not easy,” the No. 1 German women’s singles player said. “I have to, out of the pocket, pull my best game basically, and I just tried to focus on that and stay cool in the [big] moments.”

Adding: “The match, today, it wasn’t perfect. But I tried to stay in it, to stay positive, and hopefully that’s giving me some confidence for the next matches.”

The mixed doubles match will close the tie at the hands of Gao / Yan Bai duo, playing together for the first time.

The Chinese duo will battle Siegemund, who will pull double duty, teaming up with Zverev, a pivotal partnership to their nation’s former campaign.

Germany toppled Poland in the final to lift the 2024 United Cup trophy for the first time.

Team China reached the quarterfinal in its maiden appearance.

On Monday, the Chinese team will aim to match its best result and improve form by going further this new season.

According to the tournament rules, group winners in each city advance to the quarterfinals with one quarterfinal spot in Perth and Sydney awarded to the best runner-up in that city.
