Zhang Zhizhen is a Chinese professional tennis player who reached a career-high ATP singles ranking of World No. 31 in July 2024, becoming the highest-ever ranked Chinese male tennis player. He is currently the No. 3 Chinese player.

Zhang made history as the first Chinese man in the Open Era to compete in the main draw at Wimbledon and to reach the top 100 in the ATP singles rankings.

He has won three singles and two doubles titles on the ATP Challenger Tour, as well as two singles and two doubles titles on the ITF Futures Tour. Zhang won a silver medal in mixed doubles at the 2024 Summer Olympics alongside Wang Xinyu.

Player Profile and Personal Life

Zhang Zhizhen was born on October 16, 1996, in Shanghai, China, where he currently resides. Standing 193 cm tall and weighing 87 kg, he plays right-handed with a two-handed backhand.

He turned professional in 2012 and is coached by Lu Yen-hsun and Antonio Veić. Zhang comes from a sports family: his father, Zhang Weihua, played professional football, and his mother was a member of the Shanghai shooting sports team.

Zhang started tennis at age six and chose the sport over swimming as a child. He graduated from Shanghai Jiao Tong University with a degree in human resources management.

Junior Career

Zhang began his tennis journey on the ITF Futures Tour and quickly progressed to the ATP Challenger circuit.

As a junior, he showed promise but did not achieve major international titles. He made his ATP main draw debut in 2015 and steadily climbed the ranks through consistent performances on the Challenger and Futures circuits.

Career

Since turning professional in 2012, Zhang has broken multiple barriers for Chinese men’s tennis. He became the first Chinese man in the Open Era to play in the main draw at Wimbledon (2021) and the first to reach the ATP top 100 (2022).

In 2023, Zhang became the first Chinese man to reach a Masters 1000 quarterfinal at the Madrid Open and scored his first top-10 win against Taylor Fritz.

He reached the third round at both the French Open and US Open, and the second round at Wimbledon and the Australian Open. Zhang also made history in doubles, reaching the semifinals at the 2024 Australian Open and the quarterfinals at the French Open.

At the 2024 Summer Olympics, he won a silver medal in mixed doubles with Wang Xinyu. Zhang has also reached an ATP Tour singles final at the Hangzhou Open and claimed multiple Challenger and Futures titles.
