Jabeur, this years Wimbledon runner-up is hoping for another good outcome at the final Grand Slam of the year. Her win against Mandlik is her 40th win of the season. She comes in second only to No.1 player Iga Swiatek.
American Mandlik comes from the pedigree. She is the daughter of Hana Manlikova, who won the US Open title back in 1985.
In addition to her singles career, Jabeur has also been playing doubles with 23-time Grand Slam winner, Serena Williams. They were playing together before Wimbledon until Jabeur was sidelined with a knee injury.
“I have a mission, Jabeur said. Im No. 5 in the world, so for me, Im trying to represent that number as much as I can so I can really improve my game and I can really continue and improve my ranking, hopefully.
Jabeur will next play Shelby Rogers in the third round. Rogers beat Viktoria Kuzmova 7-5, 6-1.
Match Highlights:
On the other hand, Sakkari is just another of the big names that have fallen off the draw. Anett Kontaveit was defeated by Serena Williams in their second-round match.
Emma Raducanu, the defending champion, had a disappointing first-round exit. The current Wimbledon champion, Elena Rybakina, was ousted in the first round as well. Naomi Osaka is also down for the count.
Last year, Sakkari reached two Grand Slam semifinals but she appeared to struggle in 2022.
“It’s disappointing, it hurts, because I was feeling better, I was enjoying myself, feeling good on the court and it was just very disappointing that my level was that low today,” Sakkari said.
Players who are still in the running include Bianca Andreesccu. She will face Beatriz Haddad Maia next.
