Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel lamented a “spoiler” red card for Reece James as the Blues drew 1-1 away to Liverpool in the Premier League on Saturday.

James was sent off on the stroke of half-time for a handball on the goalline after a scramble with Chelsea 1-0 up.

Mohamed Salah converted the resultant spotkick, with James sent off for a ‘deliberate’ action, which split opinions, given the penalty had been awarded.

“Double punishment is always super hard and it was a bit of a spoiler, but I think its the rule now if the referee says he denies a clear goal with his hand,” Tuchel said.

“I dont like these early red cards in general, not just when its us but when Im watching on TV, because for me it spoils the game. Nobody wants to see that for 45 minutes, they want to see a high-level game.

“The situation itself, I can understand the decision and Im not saying its a wrong decision, but I did not like the way the referee checked it. He checked only the image which showed the contact and then it was a clear decision.

“On the bench we saw also the whole movement and you saw it was a deflection at short distance, it comes off his hip to his arm, the arm is not in a super unnatural arm position. I have heard referees already saying this is not a punishable action.”

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp added: “I never liked that punishment. If somebody ever listened to me about rule changes or rules then a lot of things would look completely different.

“But they still look like they look so its really a waste of time to talk about it! Yes, it was absolutely harsh. Spoiled the game? Yes, probably. It changed everything.”

Elsewhere, Arsenal’s early season woes continued with a 5-0 hammering away to Manchester City after seeing Granit Xhaka sent off. Ferran Torres netted a double for City.

West Ham United moved into top spot despite a 2-2 home draw with Crystal Palace, set up by in-form Michail Antonio with a goal and an assist.

Everton continued their bright start with a 2-0 win at Brighton & Hove Albion, while Brentford managed a 1-1 draw at Aston Villa.

Jamie Vardy got on the scoresheet as Leicester City condemned newly-promoted Norwich City to another loss, winning 2-1.

There was late drama in Newcastle as James Ward-Prowse netted a 96th minute penalty to earn Southampton a 2-2 draw.
