Sergio Ramos spurned two penalties in his record-breaking 177th international appearance before Spain rescued a late 1-1 draw against Switzerland in the UEFA Nations League in Basel on Saturday night.

Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos broke the record for most caps for a European male player on the night but it wasn’t one to remember for him as he fluffed two spotkicks, including the second one where he miskicked an apparent Panenka attempt.

Switzerland were leading 1-0 thanks to Remo Freuler’s 26th minute strike but Spain mounted the pressure in the second half after Ramos had heroically denied Haris Seferovic with a block on the line of an unguarded net.

But in the 57th minute Spain won a penalty for handball which Ramos shot to Swiss keeper Yann Sommer’s right but the Moenchengladbach stopper got down well to save his effort.

On 80 minutes, Spain won another opportunity after a poor tackle from Nico Elvedi, which earned him his second yellow, but Ramos’ soft shot was comfortably saved by Sommer.

The visitors did find a way to level, with Gerard Moreno powering in a volley from Reguillon’s left-wing cross in the 89th minute.

Spain boss Luis Enrique didn’t slam Ramos for his efforts, instead insisted if there was a third penalty, he would still have taken it.

“Sergio’s numbers for penalties are out of this world,” Enrique said. “If there had been a third penalty, he would have taken that one as well.”

Elsewhere in Group A4, Germany overtake Spain for top spot in the pool with a 3-1 home win over Ukraine in Leipzig with Timo Werner hitting a double.

The winner of the group and semi-finalist will be determined on Tuesday when the two nations meet in Sevilla with the visitors only needing a draw to progress.

In Group A3, world champions France clinched their spot in the final four with a hard-fought 1-0 win away to inaugural Nations League winners Portugal in Lisbon thanks to N’Golo Kante’s 53rd minute tap-in.

Meanwhile, Sweden defeated Croatia 2-1 in Solna to keep alive their hopes of avoiding relegation from the top league.
