Club Career
Morges-born Sommer spent time with Concordia and FC Basel in his youth, debuting for Basel at first-team level in 2008-09. He had loan spells with FC Vaduz and Grasshoppers to gain experience, before becoming Basel’s first-choice goalkeeper in 2011-12, holding own that position for three seasons before signing a five-year deal with Borussia Moenchengladbach in March 2014.
He spent 2014 to 2023 with Borussia Moenchengladbach, making 335 appearances, where he excelled but joined Bayern in January 2023 after a season-ending injury to Manuel Neuer.

Sommer played 25 times for Bayern but opted to leave the club after only nine months with Neuer’s return to fitness likely demoting him to second choice, joining Inter Milan in August 2023 on a three-year deal.
International Career
Sommer debuted for Switzerland in 2012 against Romania. He was part of their 2014, 2018 and 2022 World Cup squads, as well as Euro 2016 and Euro 2020.
