The term “red dog” was coined after Donald Nesbit “Red Dog” Ettinger, a University of Kansas linebacker who then went on to play for the New York Giants as well as the Canadian Football League. During a “red dog”, a linebacker’s goal is to tackle the quarterback or disrupt the quarterback’s attempt to pass.
