Domestic cricket
Between the two World Wars, Inter-Colonial tournament was played consistently in the West Indies from 1922 to 1939. During this period, this tournament was won by Barbados three times, Trinidad and Tobago seven times and British Guiana four times. In 1965, the Shell Shield was established. From the 1965-66 season to the 1999-2000 season, Barbados won the Shell Shield 15 times, Jamaica won 5 times, Trinidad and Tobago won 4 times, Guyana won 5 times, Combined Islands won once, Leeward Islands won three times and Leeward Islands shared with Guyana won it once.
International tours
In the West Indies, the first team to play Test cricket was the 1929-30 team of England. During this era, West Indies has quality players like Learie Constantine and George Headley. In 1934-35, an England team toured the West Indies. After the Second World War, the following International tours took place. England toured in 1947-48, 1953-54, 1959-60, 1967-68, 1973-74, 1980-81, 1985-86, 1989-90, 1993-94 and 1997-98. India toured in 1952-53, 1961-62, 1970-71, 1975-76, 1982-83, 1988-89 and 1996-97. Australia toured in 1954-55, 1964-65, 1972-73, 1977-78, 1983-84, 1990-91, 1994-95 and 1998-99. Pakistan toured in 1957-58, 1976-77, 1987-88, 1992-93 and 1999-2000. New Zealand toured in 1971-72, 1984-85 and 1995-96. South Africa toured in 1991-92, Zimbabwe toured in 1999-2000 and Sri Lanka toured in 1996-97.
World Cup performance
On 21st June 1975, the first World Cup final was played between the West Indies and Australia. The West Indies defeated Australia by 17 runs. The Man of the Match was the West Indies skipper Clive Lloyd who scored 102 runs off 85 deliveries inclusive of 12 boundaries and 2 sixers. Vivian Richards was responsible for three run outs. On 23rd June 1979, the second World Cup final was played between the West Indies and England. The West Indies defeated England by 92 runs. The Man of the Match was Vivian Richards who scored an unbeaten 138 off 157 deliveries inclusive of 11 boundaries and 3 sixers. On 25th June 1983, the third World Cup final was played between the West Indies and India. India defeated the West Indies by 43 runs. Vivian Richards was the top scorer with 33 runs and Andy Roberts took 3 wickets for 32 runs. West Indies never figured in the remaining World Cup finals in the 20th century.
Exemplary players
During the 1980s, some of the remarkable players of the West Indies were as follows – The captain of the team was Sir Isaac Vivian Alexander Richards. The opening batsmen were Desmond Haynes and Gordon Greenidge. Jeff Dujon was the wicketkeeper batsman. There were several outstanding pace bowlers like Michael Holding, Joel Garner, Andy Roberts, Malcolm Marshall, Courtney Walsh and Curtly Ambrose. Towards the end of the century, Brian Lara emerged as one of the potent batsman produced by the West Indies.
