Artur Asilbekovich Beterbiev was born on January 21, 1985, in Khasavyurt Dagestan ASSR, Soviet Union. The formidable champion stands 182 cm tall and has a wingspan of 185 cm.

He has competed exclusively as a light heavyweight during his professional run. Beterbiev is feared for his relentless, physically imposing style and exceptional power in both hands, fighting from an orthodox position.

Of Chechen descent, Beterbiev is a devout Muslim who resides with his wife and four children in Montreal, Canada, where he also holds citizenship.

Career

Beterbiev began his professional journey in 2013 after a phenomenal amateur career that saw him win gold at the 2009 World Championships and the 2006 and 2010 European Championships. He also competed in the 2012 Olympics.

He captured his first world title, the IBF belt, in 2017. His reputation as the division's biggest puncher grew as he unified the division, adding the WBC title by stopping Oleksandr Gvozdyk and the WBO belt with a destructive victory over Joe Smith Jr..

His reign as the unified champion led to a historic and defining rivalry with fellow undefeated champion Dmitry Bivol. The clash was billed as a classic matchup between the perfect puncher and the master technician. In their highly anticipated undisputed showdown in February 2025, Beterbiev's long knockout streak and undefeated record came to an end, as he lost a competitive decision.
