Beterbiev began his professional journey in 2013 after a phenomenal amateur career that saw him win gold at the 2009 World Championships and the 2006 and 2010 European Championships. He also competed in the 2012 Olympics.He captured his first world title, the IBF belt, in 2017. His reputation as the division's biggest puncher grew as he unified the division, adding the WBC title by stopping Oleksandr Gvozdyk and the WBO belt with a destructive victory over Joe Smith Jr..
