Drop step

A Drop Step is an offensive move in basketball, used by a player in the post position to create space for a shot attempt.

The player with the ball stops dribbling and then takes a step in one direction while simultaneously pivoting towards the basket. This move is designed to quickly shift the player's body positioning relative to the defender, ideally creating separation for an open look at the basket.

Drop steps can be performed in two main directions: toward the middle of the court (inside) or the baseline (outside).

The chosen direction often depends on the defender's positioning and the post player's preferred shooting hand.

When executed properly against a tightly guarding defender, the drop step can catch them off balance and allow the offensive player to establish a deep post position or drive to the hoop.

To perform an effective drop step, the post player should first establish a strong, low stance.

Upon receiving the ball, they should quickly decide on a direction, plant the foot closest to the basket, and take a wide lateral step with the other foot while dropping their inside shoulder.

This sudden change of direction, combined with a forceful pivot, is what creates the separation from the defender.
