Double foul

A Double Foul in basketball happens when two opposing players foul each other simultaneously. Both players are charged with personal fouls, but the penalties cancel out. The team that had possession keeps the ball and play continues.

Double fouls are rare but can occur when players fight for position or rebounds. The fouls don't have to be the same type, just committed at the same time. For example, one player may push while the other holds.

If a double foul is called when neither team has possession, a jump ball decides who gets the ball. The fouls are recorded, but no free throws are awarded. Referees must determine if the contact was enough to warrant a double foul call.
