A Dish in basketball is also known as an Assist. It is awarded to a basketball player who passes the ball to a teammate in a way that leads directly to a made basket.
The teammate must score immediately or very shortly after receiving the pass for it to count as a dish.
Dishes often occur in situations where the passer has drawn the attention of the defense, allowing the scoring teammate to get open for a high-percentage shot.
Good passers are able to read the court and anticipate their teammates' movements to deliver the ball at the right moment.
Tracking dishes and assists is one way to measure a player's ability to create scoring opportunities for their team, even if they are not taking the shots themselves.
