Overtime in basketball is an extra five minutes given in a basketball game when it ends with a tie.
If the game is still tied after five minutes, then overtime is called again. The process goes on until one team scores more than the other and is declared the winner.
In NBA history, the game between the Rochester Royals and the Indianapolis Olympians in 1951 is considered as one with the most overtime periods. Their game had gone into six overtime. That game ended 75-73.
Each team is entitled to two time-outs in an overtime period. Personal fouls are carried over to overtime.
