Help Side, also known as ‘Help Side Defense’, is a defensive tactic in basketball. It is also sometimes referred to simply as – Help Defense.
It is usually used in man-to-man defense in which off-ball defenders, who are one or two passes from the ball, provide support to the on-ball player.
The ‘help side’, also known as the ‘weak-side’ is the area of the court that is away from the ball.
For an effective help-side defense, a defender must move away enough from their assigned player to deny a clear lane to the basket while also remaining close enough to return to their original position.
