Anderson was selected by the San Antonio Spurs with the 10th overall pick in the 1988 NBA Draft. He had an impressive rookie season, finishing second in Rookie of the Year voting behind Mitch Richmond.

After leaving the Spurs, Anderson had brief stints with the Toronto Raptors, New York Knicks, and Miami Heat. He then played in Europe for Olympiacos in Greece and Maccabi Tel Aviv in Israel before retiring in 1999.
