High School and College Career
Barnes attended Ames High School in his hometown. He was teammates with Dough McDermott and the two helped lead the team to the Iowa 4A State Championship. By the time he was a senior in high school, he was considered a top college recruit.He received several offers including those from Duke University, Iowa State University, the University of California, Los Angeles, and more. He decided to go with North Carolina.
He played for the college from 2010 to 2012 until he declared for the draft. While there, he was named to the First Team All-ACC.
In 2012, he decided to forgo his college eligibility and declared for the NBA.
Professional Career
Barnes was selected during the 2012 NBA Draft. He was a first-round pick and the 7th overall pick of the draft and was chosen by the Golden State Warriors. In his first year with the Warriors, he was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team. In 2015, he was a part of the team that won the NBA Championships that year.In 2016, he signed a four-year contract with the Dallas Mavericks. The deal was worth $94 Million. He did well with the Mavericks and helped them win many games. In February 2019, he was traded to the Sacramento Kings for Justin Jackson and Zach Randolph. He debuted for the Kings two days after his trade. After the 2019 season, he signed a contract extension with the Kings that was worth $85 million.
In 2020 he tested positive for COVID-19. As of the 2023-2024 season, he still plays for the Kings.
