The Indian Wells Open, also known as the BNP Paribas Open, is a prestigious professional tennis tournament with a rich 50-year history.

About

Founded in 1974, the event has evolved significantly over the decades, changing locations several times before settling in Indian Wells, California in 1987.

The tournament is played on outdoor hard courts (Plexipave) at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, which boasts the world's second-largest permanent tennis stadium. Currently classified as an ATP Tour Masters 1000 event for men and a WTA 1000 event for women, the Indian Wells Open offers substantial prize money, with both the men's and women's events providing US$8,995,555 in 2024.

Attendance

The tournament's popularity is evident in its impressive attendance figures, with 493,440 spectators at the 2024 event, making it the best-attended tennis tournament outside the four Grand Slams.

This has earned it the unofficial title of the "Fifth Grand Slam".

Sunshine Double

The Indian Wells Open marks the beginning of the "Sunshine Double," followed by the Miami Open, comprising two elite hardcourt tournaments in the United States during early spring.

Both the men's and women's events feature a 96-player singles draw and a 32-team doubles draw, with 48 qualifiers for singles.

Classification

Throughout its history, the tournament has been part of various circuits, including the Grand Prix tennis circuit from 1977 to 1989, before joining the ATP Tour and WTA Tour.

It is currently classified as an ATP 1000 and a WTA 1000 event.

Records

In the men's singles category, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer share the record for most titles, each having claimed victory five times. Federer, however, holds the record for most finals appearances with nine.

Both Federer and Djokovic have achieved the remarkable feat of winning three consecutive titles, with Federer's streak occurring from 2004 to 2006 and Djokovic's from 2014 to 2016.

In the women's singles category, the tournament has seen a more diverse group of champions. Ten players have each won the title twice, including American legends Martina Navratilova and Lindsay Davenport, Germany's Steffi Graf, and more recent stars like Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova, Victoria Azarenka, and Iga Świątek.

Davenport holds the record for most finals appearances with six. Navratilova stands out as the only woman to have won consecutive titles, achieving this in 1990 and 1991.

2024

The 2024 champions showcase the event's high level of competition, with Carlos Alcaraz winning the men's singles, Iga Świątek claiming the women's singles title.

Wesley Koolhof and Nikola Mektić securing the men's doubles, and Hsieh Su-wei and Elise Mertens victorious in women's doubles.

The Indian Wells Open continues to be a major fixture in professional tennis, attracting top players from around the world and offering a significant challenge early in the tennis calendar year.
