Dan Maskell was an English tennis professional who later became a prominent radio and television commentator. He was famously known as the "voice of tennis" for the BBC and the "voice of Wimbledon."

He was posthumously inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1996.

Player Profile and Personal Life

Daniel Maskell was born in Fulham, London, United Kingdom, on April 11, 1908, the seventh of eight children. He began as a ballboy at Queen's Club during school holidays.

He married his first wife, Constance Cox, in 1936, and they had a son, Jay, and a daughter, Robin. After the tragic deaths of his son in 1970 and his first wife in 1979, he remarried in 1980 to Kathleen Latto.

Professional Career

Maskell decided to focus on tennis and left school in 1923 to become a full-time ballboy at Queen's Club.

He was given a five-year contract in 1926 as a junior teaching professional. Maskell won the first World Professional Championships in 1927 and became the British professional champion in 1928, a title he would win 15 more times.

He also coached the British Davis Cup team to victory in 1933.

After serving in the Royal Air Force during the Second World War, he became a tennis commentator for BBC Radio in 1949 and later for television in 1951.

He retired from professional tennis in 1955.
