Robert Hewitt
Robert “Bob” Anthony John Hewitt is a Hall of Famer in the world of tennis. He was born on January 12, 1940 in Australia, and is married to Dalaille, who came from Johannesburg, South Africa. After his marriage, he officially became a South African citizen.
He was born and bred an Aussie, he harnessed his tennis skill and became one of the group of people that made waves in the tennis world. He first made himself known by winning the doubles tournament of the 1962 and 1964 Wimbledon with his partner Fred Stolle. However, it was his marriage to his wife that broke their highly potent partnership. Having married his wife, Hewitt moved to South Africa and became a South Africa citizen. Since he did not represent Australia for the David Cup, he became eligible to represent South Africa.
It was then that he was paired with McMillan and remained partners for a good 15 years. Their partnership made waves more than his partnership with Stolle, having won Wimbledon doubles three times (1967, 1972, and 1978). They also won the 1972 French Open and the 1977 U.S. Open. Not only that, but they also won approximately 60 more titles on top of those notable titles.
Between the two of them, Hewitt proved to be the better singles player. This was proven when he garnered 7 pro titles playing in singles. Although he did not win any of the Grand Slam tournaments, he did play well, making him reach the quarterfinals in two Wimbledon tournaments.
With his 7 pro titles in singles plus his 65 titles in doubles, Hewitt was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1992 to mark his excellence in the tennis playing world.
