Filippo Volandri
Filippo Volandri is an Italian tennis coach and former professional player. He reached a career-high singles ranking of World No. 25 in July 2007.
Volandri won two ATP singles titles during his career and competed on the ATP Tour for nearly two decades, earning close to $4 million in prize money. After retiring in 2016, he became a coach and, since 2021, has served as the captain of Italy’s Davis Cup team, leading his country to Davis Cup titles in both 2023 and 2024.

Career
Volandri turned professional in 1997. He won his first ATP singles title at the St. Pölten International in Austria in 2004 and claimed a second at the Campionati Internazionali di Sicilia in Palermo in 2006.His signature achievement came at the 2007 Rome Masters, where he, as a wild card, defeated World No. 1 Roger Federer in straight sets before reaching the semifinals—becoming the first Italian to advance that far since 1978. The same year, Volandri was seeded at the French Open and made the fourth round, peaking at No. 25 in the world rankings.
Over his career, Volandri reached nine ATP singles finals and was runner-up seven times. He also appeared in one ATP doubles final. He was a mainstay on the ATP Challenger Tour, amassing over 300 match wins at that level and earning a reputation as a Challenger clay-court stalwart. His later years on tour were mainly spent on the Challenger circuit.
After retiring in 2016, Volandri became a tennis coach, and in 2021, he took over as Italy’s Davis Cup captain. Under his leadership, Italy won the Davis Cup in 2023 and 2024.
