Player Profile and Personal Life
Elina Avanesyan was born on September 17, 2002, in Pyatigorsk, Russia, to Armenian parents who relocated from Nagorno-Karabakh in 1992.She began playing tennis at age six, inspired by her family's support. Avanesyan enjoys spending time with her family and listening to music. She is sponsored by Head and Adidas. In August 2024, she became an Armenian citizen and began representing Armenia on tour.
Junior Career
Avanesyan competed in several junior tournaments in Yerevan, Armenia, winning four of them. She developed her game on the ITF Junior Circuit before turning professional in 2017.Career
Since turning professional in 2017, Avanesyan has steadily risen through the ranks.She won her first ITF singles title at a W25 event in Shymkent, Kazakhstan, in 2019. Her WTA breakthrough came in 2023, when she reached the fourth round at Roland Garros as a lucky loser, defeating 12th seed Belinda Bencic for her first Grand Slam and top-20 win.
She repeated her French Open fourth-round run in 2024, defeating top-10 player Zheng Qinwen along the way.
In 2024, Avanesyan also reached her first WTA final at the Iași Open and made her Australian Open main draw debut, where she upset eighth seed Maria Sakkari for her first top-10 victory. She reached the third round at both the Australian Open and Miami Open, and made her first WTA 500 semifinal at the Mérida Open, becoming the first Armenian to do so.
Avanesyan has also posted strong results in doubles, winning nine ITF titles and reaching the third round of the US Open in 2023.
