She started playing tennis when she was just 8 years old when a friend introduced her to the game.
She turned pro in 1999 and during her career, she has worked with a number of coaches including David Taylor, Miles Maclagan, Simon Rea, Joshua Eagle, and Rennae Stubbs. She won a total of US$20,069,776 in prize money, which makes her 22nd in all-time rankings.
Career
She spent her early career playing in the ITF circuit in Australia. She made her professional debut in 1999 but she did not make it to the main draw of a Grand Slam until 2002. That year, she was in the opening rounds of the women’s singles and women’s doubles at the Australian Open.
2005 is considered to be her breakthrough season in doubles which was highlighted by her first Tour singles finals appearance and a huge doubles event with partner, Lisa Raymond.
She also had back-to-back finishes as a runner-up at Gold Coast and Sydney. This success continued into 2006, when Stosur was ranked at No. 1 in doubles.
Her breakthrough in singles was in 2009. In 2010, she became the first Australian-born woman to enter the top 5 world rankings since 1985. Since then, Stosur has acquired titles including her first Grand Slam tournament title in 201 – winning the US Open.
In 2010 and 2011, she reached the semifinals of the WTA Finals. In 2013, she was in the finals of the WTA Elite Trophy but lost to Nadia Petrova.
She continued to make consistent appearances in the grand slams in the singles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles categories. In 2019, she won her third Grand Slam women’s doubles title. She followed this up with a win in the same category at the 2021 US Open.
In 2021, she was also in the finals of the Australian Open mixed doubles category, paired with Matthew Ebden. The following year, she was in the finals of Wimbledon, paired with Ebden again.
She retired from playing singles tennis in 2022 and from doubles in 2023.
