Julien Benneteau is a French professional tennis player. He was born on December 20, 1981 in Bourg en Bresse, France to parents Andre and Lawrence. He has one brother, Antoine, who had played in Futures events from 2004-2007, and two sisters, Dominique and Marie-Sophie. He started playing tennis at four years old, and is a member of “Team Lagardere”.

Benneteau went pro in 2000, and immediately compiled a 23-20 record in Futures events, reaching semi-finals twice in French Futures. He also won a Challenger and Futures titles in doubles with his partner, Mahut. By 2001, he made his ATP debut and went on a 16-13 record in Futures as well as 3-2 record in Challengers. That year, he also managed to land two Futures finals – but he did not win.

Fast forward to 2006, Benneteau compiled his best season to date with his first Top 50 finish as well as reaching his first personal high with 24 wins. He qualified four times during the course of the year, including three of the first four tournaments he played in the year. It was in that year that he earned his personal-best at $523,735 and passed the $1 million in his career.

His best career victory came on November 2009 when he won at the 2009 Paris Masters. He was able to score a huge upset against Roger Federer during the second round. On top of that, he was in front of his home crowd.

Since then, Benneteau has gone up against many big names and several times against Federer. However, he was not able to attain substantial victories during the recent years. He did, however, participate during the 2018 Australian Open, and went against Fabio Fognini during the third round.

Over the course of his career, Benneteau has a record of 265-286 in singles, and 260-189 for doubles. While he does not have any titles in singles, he does have 12 career titles in doubles. He also does not have any Grand Slam titles in singles, but he has 1 Grand Slam title in doubles, which was the 2014 French Open. He is currently ranked No. 55 as of February 2018; however, the highest rank he has achieved was at No. 25.
