Jan-Lennard Struff was born on April 25, 1990, in Warstein, Germany, and continues to reside there. Standing 193 cm tall and weighing 92 kg, he plays right-handed with a two-handed backhand.

He turned professional in 2009 and is coached by Marvin Netuschil. Struff comes from a tennis family—both parents, Dieter and Martina, are tennis coaches who guided his early development. He became a father in 2019.
