Both of her parents were athletes. Her mother is Sybil Smith who is an accomplished swimmer and is in the Boston University Hall of Fame. Her father, John Stephens, played in the National Football League for the New England Patriots.
She attended the Evert Tennis Academy and later the Nick Saviano High-Performance Tennis Academy. She turned pro in 2009 and has made around US$17.9 million in prize money throughout her career.

Career
Stephens began her career playing in the ITF Circuit. She played in the qualifying rounds of the US Open but she did not make it to the main draw until 2011. In 2013, she made it to her first Major semifinals at the Australian Open. That same year, she made it to the quarterfinals of Wimbledon.
In 2017, she won the US Open women’s singles, beating fellow American Madison Keys. The next year, she made it to the finals of the French Open but was beaten by Simona Halep. In 2018, she made it to the WTA Finals final round but lost to Ukrainian player Elina Svitolina.
In 2022, she made it to her fourth Grand Slam quarterfinals at Roland Garros. In 2023, she made it to the fourth round of the French Open. She was also in the third round of the Canadian Open and the Cincinnati Open.
