Irina-Camelia Begu was born on August 26, 1990, in Bucharest, Romania. She still resides in her hometown. She plays right-handed and has a two-handed backhand. She is 181 cm tall. His aunt, Aurelia Gheorghe, a former tennis player introduced her to the sport. Begu started playing when she was three and a half years old. She is a fan of Martina Hingis.

She turned pro in 2005 and has been coached by Teodor Bolanu. Throughout her career, she has earned around US$7.8 million in prize money.

Career

She began her career mostly playing in the ITF Circuit. She did not make her Grand Slam main draw debut as a singles player until 2011 but before that, Begu had been playing in the qualifying rounds.

On her first outing as a singles player in the Majors, she made it to the second round of the French Open in 2011. In the same year, she was named the WTA Newcomer of the Year.

In the same year, as a doubles player, she was in the second round of the US Open. The following year, she made it to the quarterfinals of the Australian Open. Her best Grand Slam finish in a Grand Slam was as a doubles player. In 2018, she was in the semifinals of the Aussie Open, and in 2021, she was in the semis of the French Open.

In 2022, she made it to the fourth round of Roland Garros. In 2023, she made it to the third round of the same Grand Slam.
