Her father was a goalkeeper for NK Osijek, and she has a brother named Bruno. She began playing tennis at age six and trained at the IMG Academy from age nine. She speaks Croatian, English, and Italian.

Vekić was in a relationship with tennis player Stanislas Wawrinka from 2015 to 2019. In 2021, she founded DNNA, a luxury home fragrance brand that sells beeswax candles and reed diffusers, with proceeds supporting bee conservation in Croatia.

Career

Donna Vekić turned professional in 2012 and quickly made her mark by reaching the final of the Tashkent Open in her WTA main-draw debut, becoming the youngest player to reach a final at the event in six years. She broke into the Top 100 in 2013 and won her maiden WTA singles title at the 2014 Malaysian Open.

In 2017, Vekić won her second WTA title at the Nottingham Open and reached the third round at the US Open. She broke into the Top 50 for the first time and finished the year ranked No. 56. In 2018, she reached the fourth round at Wimbledon and the semifinals at the Washington Open, finishing the season ranked No. 34.

Vekić’s breakthrough continued in 2019 with a quarterfinal appearance at the French Open and a quarterfinal at the US Open, becoming the first Croatian woman to reach the US Open quarterfinals since 2016. She finished the year ranked No. 19, her best year-end finish.

In 2021, after overcoming injuries and surgery, Vekić won the Courmayeur Ladies Open, her third WTA title. She reached the fourth round at the Australian Open and competed at the Tokyo Olympics, where she reached the quarterfinals.

In 2022, Vekić returned to the Top 50 after a runner-up finish at the San Diego Open.

She reached the semifinals at the Bad Homburg Open in 2024 and made her first Grand Slam semifinal at Wimbledon, becoming the first Croatian woman to do so since 1999. At the 2024 Paris Olympics, she won the silver medal in singles, the first Olympic medal for Croatian women’s tennis.

In 2025, Vekić reached the fourth round at the Australian Open and the semifinals at the Linz Open and Dubai Championships. She continues to compete at the highest level while balancing her entrepreneurial ventures and philanthropic efforts.
