Andrey Golubev
Born on July 22, 1987, Andrey Golubev is a Kazakhstani tennis player who is based in Italy. He started his ITF career in the satellite tour in 2003, and earned his first ranking points in Serbia, followed by more points in Italy. He played as a wild card in the Arpa Ceramic Cup in Italy, losing to Salvador Navarro after winning a single set. After several more tours in Italy where he managed to reach the semis and the QF, he was able to gain 25 more ATP Entry ranking points by the end of 2004. He got into the top 500 a year later, finishing the season with a career high ranking.
He attempted to qualify for his first ATP International Series Event at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open in Doha but lost his first match in straight sets. He also entered the qualifiers for the Australian Open, winning his first qualifying match against Ernests Gulbis. Although he failed to make it to the second round he was able to enter the top 300 for the first time.
Golubev qualified for his second ATP event in 2008 in the Next Generation Adelaide International but lost to Gulbis in the first round. One consolation was his win in Germany, where he won in eight straight matches as well as his first career challenger. He gained a career high ranking of 135.
He also qualified for his first career ATP Masters in the same year although he lost to Thomas Johansson in the first round. Golubev also qualified for the US Openin 2008 ,where he lost in the first round to Swiss player Stephane Bohli. By some stroke of luck, Juan Carlos Ferrero had to pull out of the game and Golubev was chosen to replace him. Golubev made his Grand Slam debut by facing off against Brendan Evans, who he defeated after three sets before bowing to David Nalbandian in round two.
