Daniel Nestor and Max Mirnyi paired up to win their first Grand Slam title together on Saturday, defeating Eduardo Schwank and Jun Sebastian. Second-seeded Nestor had previously won six titles in men’s doubles while Mirnyi has won five previous titles. Because this was the first time that the two have paired off in a major tournament, they were far from sure about a victory in the finals.
“We knew on paper we’re capable of playing well together,” Mirnyi said. “Up until you produce a result, you never know.”
The pair saved three break point in the first set to force a tiebreaker. This was followed by a lead by the opponent when they jumped to a 3-0 and held serve to even the score at one set for each team.
“Today was a dog fight,” Nestor remarked. “I thought those guys were playing tough. We were fortunate to win the first set. “It was finally a double fault on match point that gave their tandem the win. This was also Cabal’s and Schwank’s first pairing. This was Cabal’s first Grand Slam appearance and is the first Colombian man to make it to any major final.
In mixed doubles, Scott Lipsky and Casey Dellacqua defeated defending champions Nenad Zimonjic and Katarina Srebotnik for the title. Both Lipsky and Dellacqua were unseeded and trailed 6-4 in the super-tiebreaker before pulling ahead with six of the last seven points. Lipsky has spent most of his career playing in the minor tours before winning his first Grand Slam title on Thursday. Meanwhile, another unseeded duo defeated Sania Mirza and Elena Vesnina in women’s doubles. Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka became the sixth unseeded pairing to win a major title in 30 years after winning the title on Friday.
