WTA has declared that their Player of the Year for 2010 is Kim Clijsters.
During the 2010 season, Clijsters was victorious this year at five tournaments, including the WTA Championships. This marks her second consecutive title winning at Flushing Meadows. The last time she was Player of the Year was in 2005.
The said award was presented to the Belgian on Wednesday. The Player of the Year award is given to a player who has done the most to support fellow players via the WTA players’ council as well as various other initiatives.
Other awards were also handed out that day, such as the Comeback Player of the Year to Justine Henin, the Humanitarian of the Year award to Maria Sharapova, and the Doubles Team of the Year to Gisela Dulko and Flavia Pennetta. The Newcomer of the Year award was given to Petra Kvitova, 20 years old from the Czech Republic.
