Williams’ win catapulted her into the No. 1 spot on the World Tennis Ranking. When asked about her current ranking, Williams answered saying, “I always believe I’m the best, whether I’m No. 1 or 100,” She also added. “Just having that extra bonus is pretty cool.”

When the game was done, William’s opponent confessed that she was awed by her opponent. This is the young Russian’s first time competing for the No. 1 spot as well as for an Australian Grand Slam title. “She (Williams) played exactly the way she had to play and she was much more aggressive,” Safina reported. “She didn’t give me a chance.”

Williams started the year at No. 2. Her last appearance at No. 1 was at the end of her 52-week reign that started in July 2002.

Together with her sister Venus, she also won a doubles Grand Slam title in the Aussie Open. Her winnings, which totaled $23.5 Million, have made her the all-time top money winner in women’s sports.

The Williams sisters are set to co-celebrate their wins with American twins and doubles winners Mike and Bob Bryan.
