Canadian tennis player Victoria Mboko announced on Friday that she will miss the remainder of the grass season, including Wimbledon, due to a knee injury.
World No. 9 Victoria Mboko took to social media to share an update on the knee injury she sustained during her singles match against Karolina Pliskova at the HSBC Championships last Wednesday in London.
In her social media post, she wrote: "Unfortunately, my fall on Wednesday caused an injury to the MCL on my left knee, which sadly means I will miss the remainder of the grass season. This unfortunately means Wimbledon too, a tournament I had been so looking forward to playing this year."
On Tuesday, the 19-year-old took to the court at Queen's Club to launch a doubles run alongside 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams, playing her first official match since 2022.
The pair debuted with a solid 7-6(2), 6-2 triumph over the No. 3 seeds, Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Erin Routliffe, advancing to the doubles quarterfinals.
"Lastly, thank you @serenawilliams for giving me this incredible opportunity to play alongside you," she added.
"I learnt so much from you and am so sorry our tournament came to an end prematurely, but I hope we can play together again soon and finish what we started."
On Wednesday, Mboko fell hard during her second-round singles match against Pliskova, injuring her left knee, forcing her to retire from the tournament, an unexpected end to their brief but historic journey.
"What a fun and memorable week at @hsbcchampionships. Thank you to everyone who made it so special," the 73-time WTA singles title holder wrote in a post on Instagram.
"Wishing you a speedy recovery, @vickymboko. Can't wait to see you back on court."
Continuing her return to professional tennis on grass at the age of 44, the Olympic gold medalist received a doubles wildcard to play at the Berlin Open next week, teaming up with world No. 10 Karolina Muchova.
