The 32nd edition of the Terra Wortmann Open concluded on Sunday with an enthralling title match, which saw 2023 Halle champion Alexander Bublik produce an emphatic 6-3, 7-6(4) win over world No. 11 Daniil Medvedev in 81 minutes on the OWL Arena.
During the trophy ceremony, the two-time champion shared: “This is a very special place for me. I’ve won here twice now, and I’m looking forward to many more years.”
As a result of an outstanding week, the Kazakh became the fourth player to win multiple titles in tournament history.
The first set saw the title contenders holding their ground behind the serves until the 27-year-old converted a clinical break in the eighth game by hitting a backhand shot down the line.
Then, he held to love, closing out proceedings 6-3 with an ace in just 26 minutes.
As the second set wore on, baseline rallies intensified, having the spectators on the edge of their seats.
The 2022 runner-up had found his groove, stepping up the pressure in his bid to capture his 21st ATP title. Nonetheless, his opponent shut the door, neutralizing a set point in the 10th game, leading to a tiebreak.
Medvedev came out firing, opening a 4-1 advantage, but that was as far as he would go.
From there, Bublik was dominant, earning six points in a row to seal the set 7-6(4) and the championship match, winning 79 percent of the points behind his first serve.
Building his game around his lethal serve, he showcased his unique skill set, executing drop shots with exquisite precision while generating power off both groundstroke wings.
All in all, he hit 31 winners against 20 unforced errors and without dropping serve all match.
Delivering a high-level tennis display from day one, he took down all five opponents he met en route to the final, including world number one Jannik Sinner, a second-round upset that translated into the most significant win of his career by ranking.
Furthermore, after another scintillating performance on German soil, he finished his campaign by striking 76 aces throughout the ATP 500.
On top form since reaching his maiden quarterfinal at Grand Slam level at Roland-Garros early in June, he carried momentum onto the grass in the build-up to Wimbledon.
On Monday, he will rise in the Rankings to world No. 30. Also, the victory in Halle guarantees the talented player will be seeded at the third major of the season.
Despite missing the title, the former US Open champion walked tall during his campaign, close to his best tennis in quite some time. As of Monday, the 29-year-old will return to the Top 10, having achieved his first final in over a year.
