British player Daniel Evans won his first ATP 500 title after beating Tallon Griekspoor in the finals of the Citi Open in Washington, DC.

He climbs to World Number 21 after he beat Griekspoor 7-5 6-3 in a match that featured a 90-minute rain stoppage. This is a new career high for Evans and is also the biggest title of his professional career so far. He has also not won a tour-level title since April. Evans only dropped one set on his way to win the DC title. He beat Frances Tiafoe and Grigor Dimitrov along the way."To do the work I've done and to stick with it and come through is [amazing]," said Evans."The last game sort of summed up my week. I got out of trouble and it was an amazing week," said Evans, who began the tournament on a seven-match losing streak.”"I wasn't playing very well and I wasn't happy with my game."Evans is the oldest Washington DC champion since Jimmy Connors who won back in 1988 at 35 years old. “I had to keep telling myself it was match-by-match and not so long ago I wasn’t playing great,” he said.“It was a good effort mentally to just stay in the present and keep fighting for each point. And I did a great job of that this week.”“Any title is special. It’s obviously the biggest of my career,” Evans also added. “I played some very good tennis this week and super happy to come out on top.”
