The American defeated Anna Karolina Schmiedlova in straight sets in the fourth round 7-5 6-2. Swiatek for her part, went up against Ukrainian player Lesia Tsurenko who retired 5-1 after she took a medical timeout due to illness.
Gauff’s win against Schmiedlova was her 37th consecutive win against a player outside the Top 50 of the world rankings.
In the four matches she’s at Roland Garros, she hasn’t gone up against a player in the Top 60 but her next match with the World Number 1 is an entirely different ballgame.
To her credit, Gauff is the only teen in the top 49 in the world.
In the past times they’ve met, Swiatek has won all of the 12 sets she’s played with the American. Gauff had said that there was no point visiting last year’s final, which was also a stunning straight-sets win for Swiatek.
“I don’t want to make the final my biggest accomplishment,” she said.
“Since last year I have been wanting to play her, especially at this tournament. I figured that it was going to happen, because I figured I was going to do well, and she was going to do well.”
“The way my career has gone so far, if I see a level, and if I’m not quite there at that level, I know I have to improve, and I feel like you don’t really know what you have to improve on until you see that level.”
Also on Monday, Ons Jabeur will be going up against Beatriz Haddad Maia.
