The outburst happened after Ymer pleased with the umpire – Rogerio Santos, to check a ball mark on the clay during his match against Arthur Fils.
The umpire said that he had seen the ball bounce on the line and didn’t think it was necessary for him to check the mark on the clay. Despite that, Ymer was adamant that the ball had gone out.
“I have never witnessed that a ref says, ‘I’m not going to go down and check the mark.’ It doesn’t happen. Why are you not checking the mark I’m giving to you?” Ymer said to the umpire.
After that, Fils broke Ymer’s serve. In frustration, Ymer smashed his racket on the base of the umpire’s chair twice, breaking the head away from the handle on the second hit.
This quickly led to the Swiss player’s disqualification. Ymer then went over to congratulate Fils who will next face Canadian Felix Auger Aliassime.
Last year, a similar incident happened at the Mexican Open but that involved Alexander Zverev. The consequences were far more severe for Zverev as he was fined US$25,000 and he was suspended for eight weeks.
During the time of the incident, Zverev was also booted from the tournament and was fined, and was also made to forfeit the prize money he had already won.
Zverev was also stripped of the ranking points he had already accumulated at the time.
