The Brits poor run continues with this loss as he is out at just the second round. He won the first set but failed to rally strong enough to beat the Italian.
He has been struggling with an ankle injury lately but was well enough to make it past the opening round before eventually being stopped in his tracks by Sonego after he delivered a break and took the lead in the second set.
Prior to the match, Evans was determined to stop the losing streak he has been plagued by recently. The second-round match was just the second time that the two met on the court. Their record is now at 2-0.
Evans was clearly frustrated especially when he failed to convert any of the four break points he tried to establish.
He will next go up against American favorite Frances Tiafoe who beat Japan’s Yosuke Watanuki.
“It was brutal tonight, just one of those nights you try to get over the line,” Tiafoe said.
“I was a little frustrated as I had never seen him play and he played very well and was hitting incredibly from the baseline.
He was playing lights out and I was on the back foot a lot. He played a helluva match tonight, so give respect where respect is due. He was so red hot but I was hoping his level might drop in glimpses and I did a good job of taking advantage when it did.
